The 5th episode of the Aotearoa Independent Film Podcast is here!
In this episode, I sat down with Iranian-New Zealand writer, actor & filmmaker, Ghazaleh Gol.
Ghaz and I discussed a whole range of topics including her perspectives on how filmmakers ultimately need to discover their own journey both thought the ‘career’ of working in film and through ‘the study’ of film history, not just relying the classic 'critic's lists' but also to expand your tastes and find unique, lesser known films that can speak to and inspire you more directly with their unique visions and styles.
We also discussed the differences between positive, genuine representation in the arts and empty 'diversity' and how this representation is important throughout all part of the filmmaking process, from the creative to the organisational to the technical.
Finally, we also discussed our thoughts of the importance of aspiring filmmakers to get out and become a part of their local filmmaking community. From making friends, working with others and just getting your name out there. Ghaz shared her perspective on how even if this process can feel slow and you’ll often be met with rejection, establishing yourself in people’s minds and a nice, genuine, passionate filmmaker will always benefit you and your work in the future.

As always I would also like to extend a huge thank to Day One for very kindly stepping in with production support for the Aotearoa Independent film Podcast.
I wouldn’t have to able to do this Podcast without their help!
